Tournament Rules

Age divisions available to compete are 21+,30+ 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+, & 75+ with a minimum team requirement per division of 4 teams by March 1, 2025. If a division does not have 4 teams by March 1, 2025 that division will be cancelled and you will be notified by the SharMed executive team.

Games will be in a round robin format Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday Finals. Friday games will be held later in the day and will only pertain to South-Western Ontario teams.

Team Dropout Policy

Teams that cancel after March1st will not receive a refund. Teams that cancel before the deadline will receive a full refund. All cancellations will be reviewed by the SharMed Executive committee before a refund is granted.

ENTRY FEE, ROSTERS & PRIZING INFORMATION

Teams will be guaranteed 3 games and all players will receive a welcome gift and tickets for post game beverages. A championship and runner-up banner will be presented on-ice per division as well as the Adult Nationals Trophy for the winners of each division.

Cost per team to enter the Adult Nationals Tournament is $ 1,995.00. To secure your spot in the tournament, a non-refundable deposit of $500 is due at time of registration. Final payment will be taken automatically 30 days after registration for teams that choose the deposit option.

A waitlist is available at no charge for teams that are unable to secure a spot. It is highly recommended that teams wanting to play (who are unable to secure a spot if the event is full or miss the deadline) complete the registration form. Events change and teams may drop out in which case, the first team on the waitlist per division, will be granted a spot.

Age Requirements

All players must meet age division requirements, with the exception of goalies, who can be up to 5 years below their respective age bracket.

Player ages will be determined by calendar year. (ex: A player 39 years old is eligible to play in a 40+ division as long as he/she turns 40 by December 31 of 2025).

No double rostering. Players can only play on one team in one division.
Players must play in one preliminary game to be eligible for playoff games.

IDs will be required prior to the 1st game for all players, and could be checked throughout the tournament

  • Rosters are due by April 1, 2025.
  • The maximum roster size is 20 including goalies.
  • *The SharMed executive reserves the right to make decisions regarding tournament rules, format etc.

Game Format & Tie Breaker Rules

DIVISIONS

  • Tier 1 is the highest level of hockey at this event. “A” league caliber players with some “B” players on teams.
  • Tier 2 is made up of “B” league caliber players with some “C” league players.
  • Tier 3 is made up of “C” league players with some “D” league players.
  • Tier 4 is made up of a mix of beginner and “D” league players
  • Open divisions are open to all players.

GAME FORMAT

  • Periods: 20-minute run time.
  • Overtime: See overtime rules below
  • Penalties: 2-minute Minor, 5-minute Major, and 10-minute Misconduct
  • Timeouts: Each team is permitted one time out per game (two minute duration).

Overtime

Round Robin Games:

  • At the end of the third period, the teams take a two minute rest period.
  • Teams do not switch ends at any time during the overtime period.
  • A five (5) minute, run time, 4 on 4, “sudden death” period will be played.
  • Penalty(s) will not carry over into the overtime and/or shoot out.
  • If neither team scores, there will be a three (3) player shootout format. Visitor shoots first.
  • If no winner is determined, then a “sudden death” shootout will be held with the visiting team shooting first, and each team getting a shot, until there is a winner.
  • Three different players are required for the first shootout. The same three players can be used during the “sudden death shootout”, only one time each. Then continue through the roster.
Semi-Final and Championship Games:

  • At the end of the third period, the teams take a two minute rest period.
  • Teams do NOT switch ends at any time during the overtime period.
  • 10 minute, ‘sudden death’ overtime periods will be played until a team scores.

Warm-ups

  • Five (5) minutes. The warm-up clock starts after the Zamboni has left the ice. No one is allowed on the ice before the Zamboni doors are closed

Ice Resurfacing

  • The ice is only to be cleaned before each game. 

Playing Rules

  • Jersey colors: Home = Light; Visitor = Dark
  • No Checking is allowed.
  • Slapshots are allowed.
  • Certified hockey helmets must be worn.
  • A forfeit will be counted as a 3-0 loss.
  • Rosters are capped at 20 including goalies.

Tie Breaker Rules

Standings Shall Be Determined Utilizing The Following Point System:

  • Win in Regulation – 3 points
  • Overtime / Shootout Win – 2 points
  • Overtime / Shootout Loss – 1 point
  • Loss in Regulation – 0 points

If Two or More Teams Have an Equal Number of Points, the Standings Shall be Determined By:

For tie-breaker purposes in determining standings in preliminary round play, a maximum six goal differential will be used regardless of a greater goal differential; ex. 15 – 2 becomes an 8 – 2 score.

  • Step 1: Most Wins
  • Step 2: Head to Head – The results in the games played between the tied teams. Note: If a team defeated the other team(s) that they are tied with, they will be ranked ahead of those other teams.
  • Step 3: Goal Differential – GOALS FOR minus GOALS AGAINST in all games played. Note: In a given game the goal differential will be a maximum of six (6) regardless of a greater goal differential (i.e. 15-2 would be counted as 8-2).
  • Step 4: Fewest goals against for all games played.
  • Step 5: Period Points (won by each team):

Each period won = 2pts., Each period tied = 1 pt. Winning the game = 4 pts.

  • Step 6: Fewest penalty minutes in all games played.
  • Step 7: Quickest first goal.
  • Step 8: Coin Toss.

Team Name Policy

Team names must not be offensive to any particular group or individual. While we encourage and enjoy creativity, we will not post team names that may be sexually suggestive, discriminatory, or harassing in any way. The SharMed executive will review all team names and if necessary, will notify teams for alternate names or modify team names by shortening or abbreviating the name or reject a team name. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and compliance in regards to this very important policy.
